Heriot-Watt University

Heriot-Watt University was ranked 22nd in the world, based on the ’international outlook’ indicator from Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Sunday Times named it ‘Scottish University of the Year’ for 2012/13 and 2011/2012. The Guardian University Guide 2014 ranked Heriot-Watt University 2nd in Scotland.

The Interaction Lab (where this project is based within the Department of Computer Science) currently consists of 4 faculty (Lemon, Hastie, Lohan, Rieser), 8 postdoctoral researchers, and 4 PhD students. Its mission is to develop intelligent interactive systems which can collaborate effectively and adaptively with humans, by combining a variety of interaction modalities, such as speech, graphics, gesture, vision, and Natural Language. Interaction Lab researchers are developing data-driven machine learning approaches to build robust agents which can adapt autonomously in uncertain and dynamic interactions.

These techniques are applied in a variety of domains, such as mobile search, automated support, technology enhanced learning, healthcare informatics, and human-robot interaction. Performance of our models and algorithms is evaluated both in simulation and in trials with real users in real-world applications. The Interaction Lab has coordinated 2 previous FP7 projects: CLASSiC and Parlance, and has been a partner in 5 others.
